Having dwarfism may lead to health concerns that should be addressed by a doctor. My daughter has attended multiple appointments with specialists and braved several procedures in order to ensure that she is healthy. Just like average height people, all people with dwarfism are different and will face different health challenges. This list of clinics, provided by LPA, provides numerous practices that specialize in care for individuals with dwarfism. It is an excellent resource to use in finding a team of doctors.
What types of specialists might someone with dwarfism want to visit?
According to Nemours Children's Health, a well-known health system for those with dwarfism, "Individuals with dwarfism may receive care from doctors who specialize in orthopedics, neurosurgery, ENT, pulmonology, and genetics." These specialist will determine if surgery, such as removal of tonsils and adenoids or decompression of the foramen magnum is necessary. Not everyone with dwarfism will require surgery but it's an excellent idea to be followed by these specialists over time.

How do doctors measure growth for a child with dwarfism?
Doctors use a different growth chart for children with dwarfism than they do for average height children. This allows for weight, height, and head circumstance to be monitored. Below, see the growth charts for both male and female children with achondroplasia.
Will my child's cognitive abilities be affected?
According to Nemours Children's Health, "Dwarfism does not typically affect intellectual ability."
Are there any FDA approved drugs to help improve growth in people with dwarfism?
Yes, as of 2021 there is a drug that is available for growth assistance. Read more about Voxzogo (vosoritide) here. Note: This drug is a controversial topic in the little people community. Please speak with your doctor about this drug and remember that there are varied opinions about the necessity of this drug.
